Okras

About Okras:

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus Moench, known in many English-speaking countries as lady's fingers or gumbo) is a flowering plant in the mallow family. It is valued for its edible green seed pods. The geographical origin of okra is disputed, with supporters of South Asian, Ethiopian and West African origins. The plant is cultivated in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions around the world.

Selecting:

Fresh and immature okra pods are readily available in the stores all around the year. The pods have attractively rich green color and neutral flavor. In the store, look for crispy, immature pods and avoid those with over-ripen, sunken appearance, discolored spots, cuts and too soft.

Storage:

Once at home, place them inside the refrigerator. Eat them while they are fresh to obtain full benefits of vitamins and anti-oxidants.

Sizes:

Okra Zero; Less than 2.5cm

Okra No. 1; 2.5 - 3.5 cm
